Designing sustainable and friendly urban space for and with children

Jan Gehl, a Danish urbanist once said that most cities were designed for elephants, not for humans. Being city officials, planners, teachers as well as parents, grandparents or carers - do we know what the city looks like from the height of 95 or 140 cm, i.e. the eye level of a child? How does it sound and smell?

Do we know what children enjoy in a city and what they are afraid of? How to make them feel welcome in the space, to which they have the same rights as adults?

What they need to become independent users and how to talk to them about it? Do we know how a child-friendly city benefits all users?

Learning Objectives

The aim of the training is to familiarize participants with:

  • child’s rights in a city space coming from regulations implemented across the EU,
  • the experience of the young users who start their urban independence, including psycho-physical and social background,
  • recommended participatory methods: how to talk and co-create with children,
  • examples of solutions implemented by various cities,
  • the benefits of child-friendly cities for all users.

Effort

Three units: 1st unit – 1 hour theoretical background (legal, psycho-physical, sociological) 2nd unit – 1-2 hours individual exercises 3rd unit – 1 hour exercise overview, methods of working with children, with presentation of case studies
