This is an in-person course which promotes learning through experimentation, collaborative work and interdisciplinarity. It brings together students, researchers, companies, associations and research offices architecture, with the aim of exploring the collective capacity to develop circular innovation from regional materials and resources. These materials, based on electric arc furnace slag and other by-products rich in calcium and magnesium are hardened through a process called accelerated carbonation. In this practical course, participants learned how to prepare mixtures based on furnace slag electric arc and other by-products rich in calcium and magnesium. The mixture hardens with the absorption of CO₂ in a process called accelerated carbonation, which also incorporates wool and biomass. The process involves two phases: preparation of the mixtures, shaping and compacting static, and direct carbonation, carried out in a carbonation chamber under conditions controlled humidity, temperature and CO₂ concentration.
The final report of the course is available in Portuguese detailing the theoretical framework, technical processes of accelerated carbonation and the making of the final product.
Learning Objectives
Investigate the effects of using wool and biomass on slag carbonation and its implications on the physical properties of the material.
